Born in 1977, Sophie grew up in the South East of England before moving to Wales to gain her BA in English Literature. After completing her degree she spent some time travelling then moved to London where she is still currently based. She began her painting career in 2003 when an interior designer who had seen some of her work approached her to paint a piece for a boutique hotel in Oxfordshire. When the hotel opened it was displaying 10 of her paintings and since then she has continued to take both commerical and private commissions and to exhibit her work.
Her work can be divided in to two areas, landscapes and figurative work. She uses a variety of mixed media including oil, acrylic, inks and charcoal on large and small scale canvas and paper.
Artist's Statement
It's important to me that my work stand out from the room it's hung but also be a part of it; it's not about pushing boundaries but letting the beauty of the subject matter adorn the space it's placed in.
My figurative works are done with the intent of drawing out and expressing the essence of the exposed female form. Areas of the figure may be a complex blend of colour and line in contrast to other areas which are delicate and merely suggest the angle of a shoulder of curve of a thigh. It is the unifying of these two techniques that lead the eye to the whole; to the depth design and harmony of the femake body's natural beauty and presence.
My sea and landscapes sway between the dramatic and peaceful but always refelctive of the memories of places visited. Having spent my university years on the Welsh coast I have a particular affinity for those landscapes and in particular the Gower peninsular. My paintings are concerned with the forceful nature of the sea that carves in to the British coast, the seasonal changes of the land and the shifting light patterns that it brings.
